The Man and the Message

This video gives us a glimpse into the life of Eugene and his wife. It is touching, personal and profound. A bit like his writings. And, oh yes, there is phenomenal scenery! This resource will encourage you to think through our Vision: namely to follow Jesus – and to do it over a lifetime! It will also help you to think about the importance of HUBs and how they can become the relational spaces that we need to grow into the people God designed us to be.

When I first read an excerpt from The Message back in the 90’s I seriously thought that it was the work of a excitable youth pastor. Someone who was trying really hard to help his youth group get into the Scriptures whilst playing dodgeball.

Little did I know that I was half right!

Eugene Peterson wasn’t a youth pastor – far from it, but he did write The Message as a way of engaging his congregation with the Biblical story.

Romans 12:1-2 is the Infinitum back-bone passage

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Each line causes me to stop, reflect and consider.

To be truthful, Eugene does this time and time again, particularly in his interpretation of the Gospels. He has written a Biblical version that is accessible, revealing and demanding.
